Disintegrated Back Disc in Miniature Dachshund When asked to write about the effects of aging and the danger of some of the most important folks in our lives, (our little dogs), I almost immediately got tears in my eyes. Cataracts and arthritis in Miniature Schnauzer Isaac was a member of our family for nearly two years. He was between 13 and 14 when we brought him home. We loved him and learned a lot from him while he was with us. Life with Isaac began one early August evening as my husband and I were driving home at dusk. We drove past our community grocery store and I noticed something out of the corner of my eye that didn’t look quite right. My antennae went up. A small dog sat against the laurel hedge which surrounded the store parking lot. He was all alone. I turned into the parking lot and parked in front of the dog. He didn’t move. I quickly got out of the car and walked to the dog, offering him my hand for a sniff. He just sat staring as though he didn’t even see me. I remembered we had some cheese in the back seat from that evening’s dinner at a friend’s home and grabbed it and bit off a piece for him. He didn’t react when I held it in front of his nose. I had never seen such a sad look on a dog’s face, ever. He looked like he just wanted to die. At that moment, a man who looked very much like Santa Clause (no kidding!) dressed in regular clothing, joined me and said “I think this little dog needs a home” and then he walked away. The vet also confirmed Isaac had cataracts in both eyes and he was deaf. This information prompted us to learn a kind of sign language in order to communicate with Isaac. This was one of the many useful things he taught us. For the first few weeks Isaac would wake up early in the morning screaming and unable to move his hind legs. We learned that sometimes it took him a few hours before he could move around so we pulled him around on his bed from room to room so he could be with us. When he was up and around we’d go outside with him so he could relieve himself. If it was dark and we weren’t mindful of where he was headed, he would bump into one of our parked cars. It didn’t seem to matter where we parked the cars. After a month, we were amazed to note these collisions stopped. What had changed for him that could help with his eye sight? The only answer we could think of was the mangosteen. We knew a man who had worn glasses for years and after adding mangosteen to his diet his eye sight improved to the point where he no longer needed glasses. Isaac kept improving until soon he was running and playing with our elderly cat. What a pair they made, a couple of old gents romping around having a great time together! To watch a dog change from being miserable to being happy and full of life is a great gift we will always remember. Seizures and other problems in Pomeranian I have a small Pomeranian who started having seizures about 9 months ago, at least 2 times a day, the medication the Vet prescribed her (Phenobarbital) was making her dizzy among other side effects, we started her on mangosteen Sept. 2006. Allergies in Bulldog We have an English Bulldog. She gets moisture in the folds around her nose which I have to put medication on to keep it clean and dry. She also has allergies but since starting her on mangosteen a month ago these problem areas are requiring less medication. She loves it. I say this because when we tell her it’s “mangosteen time” she comes from under my desk and waits while we get it ready for her. Bee sting and irritation with an outside dog My dog spends most of his time outside. He likes to get into things and likes to bite bees and wasps out of the air!
